Nikah Nama vs. marriage certificate: what's the difference?

As There is a difference between a marriage certificate and a nikah nama in Pakistan. First of all, we must understand the differences between a marriage certificate and a nikah nama. Otherwise stated, there are two different marriage documents. The first is an Urdu Nikkah Nama. It consists of 4 pages. Both spouses receive it at the time of their marriage. The nikah nama is similarly prepared in four copies. One copy is prepared for the groom, one copy for the bride. A third copy is retained by the Nikah registrar.  The last one is submitted to the local union council office for record keeping. In Pakistan, it is concrete legal proof of the marriage or Nikah’s record between husband and wife.

Although both are issued by the Qazi office, a Nikahnama has greater legal standing than a marriage certificate. A Nikahnama is the official government document relating to marriage. Qazis must record marriages in the Nikahnama registry book

An Urdu Nikahnama consists of the signatures of the bride, groom, witnesses, etc. A marriage certificate issued by NADRA (Islamic) contains details about the couple in Urdu and English. To confirm the marriage contract between couples, foreign authorities accept the NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate.

Who Issue Computerized Marriage Certificates in Pakistan?

The NADRA does not issue marriage certificates. The following authorities issue marriage certificates:

  • Union Council
    • TMA Office
    • Cantonment Board Office
  • Arbitration Council Office

What are the Requirements for a NADRA marriage certificate?

The requirements for a NADRA marriage certificate are as follows:

  • Urdu Nikahnama
  • CNIC (Bride and Groom)
  • CNIC of the Father (Bride and Groom)
  • CNIC of Nikkah Khawan
  • Copies of Passport (In case of foreigner)

In smaller cities, TMA offices are the issuing authorities. Residents of Islamabad can obtain marriage certificates from the Arbitration Council office in Islamabad.

In Case Of Lost Marriage Certificate. Here's how to get a duplicate marriage certificate or nikah nama in Pakistan.

If you need your original written nikah nama, you’ve lost it for any reason. Then you’ll need to apply for an attested copy. The concerned officials of the Union Council fill out an application for a duplicate nikkah nama. The most important information would be where it was previously registered. This is not an easy process. It is quite complicated. Especially if you live abroad. Furthermore, it is required to visit the office frequently to get the duplicate nikah nama.

The following steps must be followed to obtain a marriage certificate from NADRA :

  1. Prepare all required documents and visit the relevant issuing office from the above list depending on your current residence address. In all major cities like Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad, and Peshawar.The following steps must be followed to obtain a marriage certificate from NADRA  authorized to issue NADRA marriage certificates using NADRA installed systems on a special paper. Residents of cantonment areas can obtain their NADRA marriage certificates from the cantonment board offices, while those in many small towns and cities can obtain them from the TMA offices, and those in Islamabad may obtain them from the Arbitration Council offices.
  2. You will be required to fill out an application form for a NADRA marriage certificate at the issuing office. These forms are available at the issuing office.
  3. In the same issuing office, you must submit your documents as well as a completed application form and fee. 
  4. On a given date, pick up your NADRA marriage certificate from the same issuing office. As a general rule, NADRA marriage certificates are issued within three to five working days if all required documents are available, but this can vary depending on the situation.
  5. Make sure all the information on your NADRA marriage certificate is accurate. Match the details on the marriage certificate with your official documents. If there is a mistake made by the issuing office, you can request a correction.
